SCOPE
The proposed Avenue 26 Bridge Seismic Retrofit Project is located in the City of Los Angeles (Los Angeles County), northeast of downtown. The Bridge is approximately 250 feet long and ranges from 40 feet to 57 feet wide, carrying four lanes of traffic over State Route 110 and the Arroyo Seco Channel in the City of Los Angeles. The project includes the seismic strengthening of the arch ribs, arch struts, and spandrel columns of the span over the Arroyo Seco Channel. (The adjacent span over the freeway is owned by Caltrans and is not part of this project.) Strengthening will consist of applying fiber wrap in layers to the areas which require strengthening. A historical board finish will be applied over the fiber wrap matching the color of the existing bridge to maintain the uniformity of the bridge appearance and protect its historic status. The retrofitting efforts will increase the overall thickness of the arch ribs by approximately 0.5 inches, and the overall thickness of the spandrel columns by approximately 0.25 inches. Work will also involve the strengthening of several column pedestals between the arch ribs and the bridge deck by the addition of concrete at the column bases. In addition, existing spalls and cracks in the structure will be filled with grout or be epoxy injected. Nur Malhis, P.E. Bridge Improvement Division 1149 S.
