SCOPE
FIRE HYDRANT MAINTENANCE SPECIFICATIONS 4.1 Lubrication of hydrant’s operating nut, and upper stem areas using manufacturer’s recommended lubricant to assist in the smooth operation of the hydrant. 4.2 Greasing of all nozzle outlets. Standard lubricant shall be a National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) approved food grade grease suitable for a temperature range of 20 degrees to 150 degrees Fahrenheit. 4.3 Tightening nozzle caps using specialized tools for recommended tightness. Repair any broken chains and replace any worn or torn nozzle gaskets. 4.4 Opening each fire hydrant with nozzle caps in place in order to perform a pressure test and for inspection of seal and operation. Ensure the main valve is completely closed and the barrel is draining during maintenance. 4.5 Flush the hydrant using a diffuser at a flow rate that will scour the fire hydrant lead and exchange the amount of water in the hydrant lead. During this process be sure to not damage landscaping. 4.6 Exercising fire hydrant control valve; process includes closing and re-opening valves completely while the fire hydrant is running enough water to flush any debris from the seat of the valve. Problems that occur during the exercise will be documented on maintenance report and a copy will be given to the City. 4.7 Clearing foliage, weeds, and grass around fire hydrant(s) to ensure compliance with Arizona’s mandatory 3’ foot fire hydrant clearance regulation. Selected fire hydrants that have other objects obstructing the mandatory clearance will be documented in the maintenance report and a copy shall be provided to the City. 4.8 Inspecting height of nozzle, nozzle direction, and operating clearances to ensure all nozzles meet the Arizona’s mandatory 18” inch clearance. All infractions will be documented in the maintenance report and a copy will be given to the City. 4.9 Paint fire hydrant with safety yellow approved color, ensuring adequate coverage. (Paint code Dunn Edwards SY 14 Safety Yellow). Andrea.Nejeres@goodyearaz.gov
