SCOPE
This project represents the first phase implementation of the zoo’s 2018 master plan, which consists of four major components: a new flamingo exhibit, treetop playhouse (elevated children’s play area), renovation of the existing front entry area and a 3.5 acre expansion for Asian exhibits, including a 7,800 SF building. The master plan is included in this RFQ for reference (see Appendix A). The new flamingo exhibit will include a pond and water treatment facilities. The proposed Treetop Playhouse area will include an elevated children’s play structure, multi-purpose lawn, birthday party ramadas, improvements to an existing adjacent aviary, and an elevated walk-way (bridge) to the future Asia section. Improvements to the functionality and appearance of the zoo’s entry are also needed. They will occur primarily outside of the existing admission gates. Proposed modifications include landscaping, irrigation, sidewalks, signage, and large shade structures. In addition, improvements to the front entry will include a more enhanced/recognizable portal to the South America exhibits and the future Asia section. The new Asia exhibits will include: tiger, pheasant, siamang, otter, gibbon, aviary, Komodo monitor, reptile and bat building, and lory parrot feeding. In addition, Asia will have a multi-purpose, indoor/outdoor pavilion, providing food service to daytime visitors and available for event rentals (e.g., weddings, meetings, etc.) in the evenings. The Asia expansion will require an approximate 3.5 acre shift of adjacent park land (west of Lakeshore Lane) to zoo jurisdiction. A small lake, numerous water features and related treatment systems will also be involved. All projects will require related infrastructure to support the new development such as electric, gas, water, sewer, communications, security systems, and maintenance access. All projects will also involve animal holding structures, caging/fencing, lighting, landscaping, irrigation and pedestrian circulation. All facilities will be designed and constructed with a focus on sustainable development and ‘green’ building techniques. sandra.alcorn@tucsonaz.gov
